About Ichiban Karate
Ichiban offers traditional training based on the principles of the Dojo Kun:Seek perfection of character
Be faithful and sincere
Cultivate the spirit of effort and perseverance
Be respectful and courteous
Refrain from impetuous and violent behavior.
In other words, it means that we strive, through regular training, to improve ourselves and learn respect for others. This, in turn, can then be applied to all other areas of life. The Dojo Kun is applied in both Dojo's, so no matter which one you attend, the basic principles are the same. Classes vary in both pace and content, so no matter your age or ability, you should find something that works for you.
Shotokan Karate is split into three disciplines, Khion (basics), Kata (forms) and Kumite (fighting). Each are taught with equal emphasis at Ichiban, as we believe that to achieve perfection, everything must be in balance. Of course, none of us have reached that lofty pinnacle and probably never will, but that doesn't stop us from striving to do so. We try to make our classes both a challenge and enjoyable and if we can have some fun along the way, so much the better.
None of our instructors are paid; we do it because we love our Karate. All we ask of you is that you attend regularly and are willing to try your best.
Our Classes
These typically run for an hour and a half and include warming up/down and stretching. We then move onto one or more of the following:-
Khion or Basics
Covering the learning, application and perfection of karate techniques - punching, kicking, striking and blocking. This can also include body conditioning and fitness training.
Kata or Forms
Practicing one of the 27 Kata's that form the Shotokan syllabus. These have been designed, at beginner level, to introduce a series of moves using basic attacking and defensive techniques against multiple imaginary opponents and which increase in both intensity and difficulty as a student progresses. In addition we learn bunkai - how these techniques can be applied.
Kumite or Fighting
Applying the techniques learned in khion training to a fighting situation. We endeavor to ensure that the kumite is aimed at the correct level/ age of the student and in the early stages of training, kumite is practiced in a very controlled manner to keep possible mishaps to a minimum.
Self Defence
Teaches practical techniques for real life situations, for example defence against 'drunken' swing puches, knife and bottle attacks.
Fitness
We incorporate exercises that help develop a strong core strength as part of the class structure, at new year often we hold fitness classes to burn off those extra pounds gained over the holiday period!
